Job Title: Trustee
Charity: Fellowship and Aid to the Christians of the East (trading name: FACE)
Mandate: 3 years
Terms: 4 quarterly board meetings per year and 2 events
Location: Board meetings are held at Romero House, Southwark, SE1 7J, or by Zoom
Reports to: Chairman, Fellowship and Aid to the Christians of the East (FACE)
What we do
FACE helps communities in the Middle East, the Horn of Africa, South-East Europe and India to free themselves from a life of poverty and inequality. Through its projects in education, healthcare and interreligious dialogue, FACE aims to foster sustainable development and to bring lasting change to the communities it serves.
The Role
You will share with the other trustees the responsibility and oversight of FACE’s governance, ensuring that the charity is:
- carrying out its purposes for the public benefit
- complying with its governing document and the law
- acting in its best interests
- being accountable and solvent
- managing its resources responsibly
- acting with reasonable care and skill
Person specification
You will have:
- sympathy and empathy for FACE’s mission
- integrity, sound judgement, discretion, and diplomacy
- ability to work as a member of a team
- willingness to share your talents and skills with the team
- willingness to learn and master the skills of being a trustee
- understanding and acceptance of the legal duties of being a trustee
Our current governance requirements
FACE is seeking trustees who have experience in one or more of the following:
- fundraising operations in the not-for-profit sector in the United Kingdom;
- charity administration or governance in the United Kingdom;
- accountancy in the United Kingdom;
- legal practice in the United Kingdom (to scrutinise internal policies, existing controls, partnership agreements, employment contracts and reports);
- human resources in the United Kingdom;
- recruitment and training of volunteers in the United Kingdom.
FACE is keen to draw applications from female candidates to improve its gender balance.
Recruitment process
Recruitment of trustees is carried out on a case-by-case basis in response to requirements of the board of trustees and in accordance with the charity’s Constitution. For the sake of equality, fairness and transparency, all recruitment and selection is overseen by a selection panel appointed by the board of trustees. Normally the panel includes at least two trustees (including the chair) and the HR advisor to the board.
